Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #7
Here we are back after a break last week leading up to Christmas. This is the fourth week of this blog entitled "Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth!" We've been discussing who we can and can't trust in mainstream evangelism today. Today is on the positive and we'll be focusing on John Piper. In case you missed the first few weeks worth of entries I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.
We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism where people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. With that said, there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips. One quick google search and you can get commentary and scripture interpretation from Billy Graham to Benny Hinn and everything in between. With so many choices and the deceitfulness of our own hearts we're apt to listen to whomever we "like" or whomever our friends listen to or whatever makes us feel good. In light of this reality let us be diligent in determining who we let speak into our life! Every heretic speaks some truth sometimes or no one would listen. My goal over the next few months is to do two blogs a week, both critiquing prominent evangelicals in our day, one on someone who is trustworthy, someone who rightly divides the Word, someone who doesn't twist the scriptures, and the other on someone who is untrustworthy, possibly deceived, and even possibly an apostate, who for filthy lucre, distorts the Gospel. Let me say up front that there may be some of these critiques that you absolutely agree with and some you may vehemently reject and at times you may think that I'm being judgmental, harsh, or you may even think I'm crazy but I challenge you to research the Word and the person and then decide. I will praise some of these men and I will reject others, it's not personal but as a Pastor with a Pastor's heart I feel compelled to protect the flock from wolves and to lead the flock to spiritual food that will equip them for this life and the next, that is the sole intent behind these blog entries! Lets get started!
This week's trustworthy Evangelical is Dr. John Piper.
John Piper is well known for what he calls "Christian Hedonism" which is essentially complete joy and adoration in and of Christ. He is now Pastor Emeritus at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minnesota and director and founder of Desiring God. Many of his works and literature can be found at www.desiringgod.org along with his popular podcast "Ask Pastor John." Here is a little of his biographical history according to www.desiringgod.org.
John Piper was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Bill and Ruth Piper January 11, 1946. When John and his older sister were still small, the family moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where John spent his growing-up years. His father was an itinerant evangelist, and his mother died in 1974 in a bus accident while visiting Israel.
In 1980, sensing an irresistible call of the Lord to preach, John became the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he ministered for almost 33 years.
Desiring God began inauspiciously in 1994 when John handed off the church’s tape ministry to his assistant, Jon Bloom.
What started with tapes and John’s books, Desiring God has blossomed into an international web ministry with 12,000+ free resources and 3.5+million monthly users. Today, John serves as lead teacher for the ministry.
Piper is also chancellor of Bethlem college in Minneapolis.
Some of his best know works are "Don't Waste Your Life," "Pierced By The Word," and my favorite, "Spectacular Sins."
Piper's most famous quote is "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him" and so that God's highest pursuit ("his glory") and man's deepest and most durable happiness come together in one pursuit—namely, the pursuit of joy in God.
There are a few things that I personally disagree with concerning Piper's doctrines but on foundational truths he is definitely someone in the Evangelical limelight that we can trust as he rightly divides the Word of Truth!
God bless!

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #6
Here we are back for the third week of this blog entitled "Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth!" We've been discussing who we can and can't trust in mainstream evangelism today. Today is on the negative and we'll be focusing on Jesse Duplantis. In case you missed the first two weeks worth of entries and this week's positive on R.C. Sproul, I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.
This is the third entry concerning untrustworthy evangelicals and todays, last week's, and a few more untrustworthy entries will consists of contemporary prosperity and word-of-faith preachers who were greatly influenced by the two main architects of this movements theology, Kenneth Hagin Sr.(Daddy Hagin) and Oral Roberts and one such person is Jesse Duplantis.
Lets get started!
Jesse Duplantis is a WoF(word of faith) prosperity gospel evangelist whom you've probably caught a glimpse of as you channel surf past TBN on the television. He's best known for his comedic style and extravagant lifestyle and is a close friend with last week's untrustworthy Evangelical, Kenneth Copeland. His heresy isn't just spread through his preaching but it's also in print in books such as "Close Encounters of the God Kind."
Let's get to the point, let's list known heresies credited to Jesse Duplantis.......
- Duplantis uses Genesis 2:7 the same way Copeland does and proclaims that we are "little god's" with the power to "speak" things into existence.
- He claims this power is evident in Genesis as he infers that when God brought the animals to Adam to be named that they were dead and Adam was the one who "breathed" life into them, thus giving Adam diety status.
- Another aspect of Duplantis' heresy concerning this is the statement he's made concerning God's omniscience (knowing all). He claims that God didn't know what he had created and that Adam had to explain it to him. His basis? The fact that he's known smart, creative people who created things by accident! Wow! Comparing the all knowing, all powerful God with fallen man, that always results in good theology! I hope you can hear my sarcasm!
- Claims to have been carried by a chariot to heaven where he talked with Jesus, Abraham, and David. He even said that David told him he regretted writing some of the Psalms! That's believing in the "God Breathed," infallible, perfect Word of God right?
- To top off the trip to heaven experience, Duplantis said that he sensed Jesus was sad so he asked him what was wrong and Jesus' reply was "I need you boy." Yes, you read that correctly.
- The last one, though heretical, is down right rediculous. Duplantis claims that giraffes were made with left over parts from other animals! That's why they look so strange. Trust me, I'm not making this up! Yet he's failed to do his research on the majestic animal as science has proven how precise they are constructed and that it's a natural wonder that they don't pass out from an overflow of blood to the brain when they bend over. Their 25 pound heart is made strong to pump blood to their brain and their jugular veins have one way valves blocking flow when they lower their heads! That's God's perfect work in action, not just left over parts!
I pray this has been helpful and enlightening. God bless. See

This week's trustworthy Evangelical is Dr. R.C. Sproul.
Dr. Sproul has been in the forefront of mainstream reformed theology over the past five decades. His education includes
degrees from Westminster College, Pennsylvania (BA, 1961), Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary (M.Div, 1964), the Free University of Amsterdam (Drs., 1969), and Whitefield Theological Seminary (PhD, 2001). He has taught at numerous colleges and seminaries, including Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and Jackson, Mississippi, and Knox Theological Seminary in Ft. Lauderdale.
Dr. Sproul is chairman and founder of Ligonier Ministries(www.ligonier.org). host of "Renewing Your Mind" radio broadcast, founder of RefNet(www.RefNet.fm) which is a Christian internet radio station, as well as the author of several book which includes such works as "The Holiness of God" and "Not a Chance: The Myth of Chance in Modern Science and Cosmology," as well as being Co-Pastor at St. Andrews Chapel in Sanford, FL.
As well as Dr. James White(the positive from last week) Dr. Sproul is one of my favorite apologists even though they have differing approaches. Dr. White uses presuppositionalism while Dr. Sproul uses the Thomistic approach of "classical apologetics." Many of Dr. Sproul's lectures can be found on YouTube as well as Ligonier where you can also find "Renewing Your Mind" as well as blog entries.
With Dr. Sproul's classical approach you'll be floored by his insight using logic and reason. I pray you'll give him a listen and there's no doubt that your faith will be strengthened. God bless. if

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #3
Here we are back for the second week of this blog. In case you missed the first two entries I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.
We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism where people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. Lets get started!
This week's trustworthy Evangelical is Dr. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries.
The name may not ring a bell, you may have never heard of Dr. White, he's not found on TBN or any mainstream source, but I decided that the first two trustworthy men in this series of blogs would be the two men that have had the most influence on my spiritual walk and theological perspective and last week we covered Dr. John MacArthur and now Dr. James White.
Dr. White is probably the best apologist for the Christian faith and the Reformed perspective that I've had the privilege of listening to. As an apologist he is an accomplished debater, participating in over 140+ publicly moderated debates in churches, mosques, and other forums across the globe! Dr. White has debated such topics as......
"Is the Trinity Biblical?"
"Can a Christian Lose Their Salvation?"
"Can Men Become God's?"
"Is The New Testament Reliable?"
"Who Controls Salvation?"
Dr. White has debated Mormons, Unitarians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Islamic apologists, Atheists, and more. All of his recorded debates are available at www.aomin.org. Dr. White also does a podcast twice a week which can be found at www.sermonaudio.com.
Dr. White is a professor, having taught Greek, Systematic Theology, and various topics in the field of apologetics. He has authored or contributed to more than twenty four books, including The King James Only Controversy, The Forgotten Trinity, The Potter’s Freedom, and The God Who Justifies. He is a scholar in textual criticism and is a consultant for the Lockman foundation which publishes the NASB English translation of the scriptures. Dr. White is currently working on another PhD. in textual studies as he examines P45(early papyrus document of the New Testament). As well as being director of Alpha and Omega Ministries, being a published apologist, and an accomplished debater, Dr. White is also an Elder at Phoenix Reformed Baptist Church (sermons and teachings from Dr. White which includes Church History can be found at www.prbc.org).
In my opinion Dr. White is the most consistent Christian apologist with a deep love for the Word, Christ, and the Church! There's a peace in listening as Dr. White exegetes the text of scripture from the original Greek. If you have questions, are unsettled concerning doctrine, or are looking for direction on how to answer a Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, or Muslim then Dr. White is someone you need to watch, listen to, and read. God bless.

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! Part #2
Here we are back for the second part of this weeks blog. Let me get you up to speed in case you missed the first entry but i do suggest you go back and read it as well when you're finished here.

Lets get started!
Unfortunately it's time to address the negative, someone we CANNOT trust........
Benny Hinn
It's hard to find a place to start but let's begin with background. Hinn was born in the early years of the establishment of the nation of Israel, in Israel, into a family of Greek Orthodox Christians. After certain situations his family moved to Canada where Hinn heard the heretical word-of-faith false Gospel by a woman evangelist named Kathryn Khulman and was mentored at Broadview Faith Temple by Winston I. Nunes who was a part of the charismatic heretical "latter Rain" movement. Hinn has never turned from what he learned and saw in his early years under the preaching of a false gospel, he's actually travelled farther into heresy than his mentors and have influenced, blinded, and mislead millions along the way!
There have been countless controversies surrounding Hinn over the last few decades. From investigations by the Federal Government concerning financial wrong doings to undercover surveillance by HBO and CBC which seemed to paint a vastly different picture of Hinn's "Miracle Faith-Healing Services" broadcasts around the world. It's been documented that at these "miracle" services those who are visibly disabled are ushered out of the line to Hinn, some even pushed away after refusing to step aside. In November 2004, the CBC Television show The Fifth Estate did a special titled "Do You Believe in Miracles" on the apparent transgressions committed by Benny Hinn's ministry. With the aid of hidden cameras and crusade witnesses, the producers of the show demonstrated Hinn's apparent misappropriation of funds, his fabrication of the truth, and the way in which his staff chose crusade audience members to come on stage to proclaim their miracle healings. In particular, the investigation highlighted the fact that the most desperate miracle seekers who attend a Hinn crusade—the quadriplegics, the brain-damaged, virtually anyone with a visibly obvious physical condition—are never allowed up on stage; those who attempt to get in the line of possible healings are intercepted and directed to return to their seats. At one Canadian service, hidden cameras showed a mother who was carrying her muscular dystrophy-afflicted daughter, Grace, being stopped by two screeners when they attempted to get into the line for a possible blessing from Hinn. The screeners asked the mother if Grace had been healed, and when the mother replied in the negative, they were told to return to their seats; the pair got out of line, but Grace, wanting "Pastor Benny to pray for [her]," asked her mother to support her as she tried to walk as a show of "her faith in action," according to the mother. After several unsuccessful attempts at walking, the pair left the arena in tears, both mother and daughter visibly upset at being turned aside and crying as they explained to the undercover reporters that all Grace had wanted was for Hinn to pray for her, but the staffers rushed them out of the line when they found out Grace had not been healed. A week later at a service in Toronto, Baptist evangelist Justin Peters, who wrote his Masters in Divinity thesis on Benny Hinn and has attended numerous Hinn crusades since 2000 as part of his research for his thesis and for a seminar he developed about the Word of Faith movement entitled A Call for Discernment, also demonstrated to the hidden cameras that "people who look like me"—Peters has cerebral palsy, walks with arm-crutches, and is obviously and visibly disabled—"are never allowed on stage [...] it's always somebody who has some disability or disease that cannot be readily seen." Like Grace and her mother, Peters was quickly intercepted as he came out of the wheelchair section (there is one at every crusade, situated at the back of the audience, far away from the stage, and never filmed for Hinn's TV show) in an attempt to join the line of those waiting to go onstage, and was told to take a seat. This segment was later edited with new footage and shown on Dateline: NBC in November 2005. Hinn has also been accused of an affair with Paula White(another heretical charismatic) around the time of his divorce from his wife. Initially denied, Hinn eventually confessed that they did have a "relationship." Hinn later remarried his first wife after a few years of being divorced in a lavish ceremony, all of which is COMPLETELY unbiblical, Deuteronomy even labels such an act an abomination. Though significant, these moral failures of Hinn aren't the most horrific atrocities of his ministry!
What's most disturbing are his false teachings concerning God's Word! Hinn has twisted, manipulated, and deliberately used scripture in the same way the initial deceiver did in the garden! Hinn is a charlatan of the most extreme kind, a false prophet, and a wolf in sheep's clothing. That's strong language but the stakes are too high to coddle our PC emotions. We wouldn't leave our children in the presence of a predator such as a lion or pedophile, we would call them out and defend those who are under our care. I pray that you realize that that's exactly what I'm doing here, protecting those I love by calling out the enemy and using the sword of the Lord in defense. Here are some of Hinn's false prophesies and heresies......
- Claims he and a Catholic priest channeled the power of God to heal practically every patient at a hospital in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada.
- Claimed to have video of Jesus walking around in one of his meetings. When asked to show the video, his staff said it had been “misplaced.”
- On Dec. 31, 1989, Hinn went into a trance and said God was giving him (in real time) prophecies about major events that would occur before the end of the next decade. Hinn predicted the total collapse of the American economy within a decade. He declared that during the 1990s the East Coast would be be ravaged by earthquakes; a female would be elected as president; Fidel Castro would die in office; a “short man dictator” would arise; the rapture of the church would occur; and the homosexual community of America would be destroyed by fire “in ’94 or ’95, no later than that.”
- Claimed God told him by divine revelation that there are nine members in the Godhead.
- Claimed that as a young man he was in his room talking to the Holy Spirit. When called to supper by the “woman of the house,” he said, “as I was about to leave, I felt someone take my hand and say, ‘Five more minutes. Just five more minutes.’ The Holy Spirit longed for my fellowship.”
- Claimed that an image of Jesus appeared on the wall of his church and “stayed for eight weeks.” Hinn says, “Even the people who studied the Shroud of Turin came to see this image. …the mouth [of Jesus] would move, the Lord’s mouth would move…but His mouth would only move as I was preaching.”
- Claimed (repeatedly) that he once saw a man raised from the dead on the platform on which he was standing. When later questioned by a reporter about the incident he said, “I did not see it. In that one case we did hear about it.”
- Regularly “slays in the Spirit” people who get up on stage by touching them on the forehead or cheeks, waving his coat at them, or yelling, “Fire!” Once he even managed to slay himself! This practice has not one shred of biblical support.
- Claimed to have a department that verifies all his healings. Justin Peters who writes for Grace To You said he has spoken with a former employee of Hinn who says not only that the healings are not verified but that such a department does not even exist.
- Seed-faith theology is a staple in Hinn’s teaching. He promises people that if they “sow a seed” (translated, give him money), God will give them a “harvest.”
- Teaches that “if the preaching of the gospel lacks signs and wonders, it’s an empty shell.”
- Claimed the Holy Spirit told him women were originally intended to give birth out of their sides.

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #1
In a world of easy believism and the ability to get your message out to millions with just the click of a mouse there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips. One quick google search and you can get commentary and scripture interpretation from Billy Graham to Benny Hinn and everything in between. With so many choices and the deceitfulness of our own hearts we're apt to listen to whomever we "like" or whomever our friends listen to or whatever makes us feel good. Let me say up front that there may be some of these critiques that you absolutely agree with and some you may vehemently reject and at times you may think that I'm being judgmental, harsh, or you may even think I'm crazy but I challenge you to research the Word and the person and then decide. Lets get started!
Let's start off on the positive, let's start with someone we CAN trust........
Dr. John MacArthur Jr.
There are two men that have been pivotal in leading me into the depths of truth contained in God's Word and John MacArthur is one of them. (Dr. James White is the other and we'll cover him in the next positive!) John MacArthur has served as Pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California since 1969 after graduating from Talbot Theological Seminary. For nearly fifty years Dr. John MacArthur has devoted himself to verse-by-verse exposition of the Word of God from the pulpit of Grace Community Church as well as on television, radio, internet, in publication, and conferences around the globe. He's the founder of Grace to You Media Ministries and the President of The Master's University & Seminary. Please understand that accolades, degrees, and popularity do not equate truthfulness, integrity, and scriptural purity but I just wanted you to see the longevity of one man consistently preaching the Word in it's context as it was meant for the reader in it's day. Going verse-by-verse Dr. MacArthur couldn't avoid troubling scriptures, hard doctrines, and things that make us uncomfortable. This man has been faithful in presenting the truth of God's Word!
He published his first book in 1988 "The Gospel According to Jesus" with 400 more books, study guides, and commentaries also published through the years. "Strange Fire" is one of my favorites! In 2015 the "MacArthur New Testament Commentary" was completed with thirty-three volumes as Dr. MacArthur goes verse-by-verse in detail throughout the entire New Testament.
Dr. MacArthur teaches sound biblical doctrine with proper hermeneutics to deliver sound exegesis of the text of scripture. From Reformed theology to a literal reign of Christ in the millennium Dr. MacArthur, in my opinion, is one of the greatest expositor's of our day!
Go check out sermons/lectures from Dr. John at www.gty.org!

Fear vs Faith: A God of The Known & Unknown!
If you're like me then at times you struggle with fear. I've struggled with fear, anxiety, depression, and stress since my early teens and at times it has gripped my life, limited my actions, and sucked the joy right out of me. I let fear confine me to my home town for three years! Three straight years I didn't leave the city limits of my home town because of fear, fear of what? The Unknown! I feared death, loneliness, tragedy, loss! You name it, I feared it! I've allowed the fear of what "may" happen tomorrow rob me of the joy of what had actually happened today! Listening to myself say that out loud in hindsight I realize how foolish I was! The things is, it wasn't events, people, or actions I feared, it was words! I feared words fueled by doubt. All the enemy had to do is speak doubt and I ate it up! Fear comes from doubt in the sovereignty of the God of the known and unknown! Faith drives out fear because it calls out the lies of the enemy as he speaks doubt! And even if tragedy happens, even if my worst fears come true the promise of God is that it will pass and eternal life will come! My trial doesn't define me, my fears can't confine me, my pain can't keep reminding me because one day they'll all be gone and I'll be with Christ who died for me! Don't trust what you see, trust what you know! If you go outside on a clear night and look up in the sky you can see, at most, three thousand stars and God named each one of them! Isn't that beautiful and amazing? But there's an unseen reality, you only see up to three thousand with the naked eye but there are billions and billions of stars that you can't see and he named them too! God is the God of the seen and the unseen, the known and the unknown! Scripture says that not even a sparrow falls from the sky without God's concent! He says the hairs on our head are numbered! If God is that meticulous in naming and hanging the stars, if he's so focused on the safety of some of his smallest creatures then I'm pretty sure he's watching over me! Why should I fear? He sees what I can't and knows what I don't. It's not about what I see it's about what I know and what I know is that I may make my plans but God directs my steps! Trust suffocates fear! Kill it and live in freedom!

Where Would I Be Today Without The Reformation? - 500th Anniversary of the Reformation
There are times in our lives where we must reflect on the past, maybe past decisions or even events in the past that preceded our very lives but were essential and instrumental in shaping who we are, what we believe, and how we live. That's my goal today! I want us to ask ourselves this question "where would I be today without the Reformation?" I would argue that the Reformation was inevitable and decreed by God to restore his church but just imagine with me for a moment, there was no Luther, no Calvin, no Zwingli, no protestantism, and on and on. What would that look like today?
First let's face the biggest reality of where we would be in the realm of church and worship. We definitely wouldn't be sitting in the "Bible belt" churches of America singing hymns by Wesley or Luther, we wouldn't have expositional passionate preaching, we wouldn't have altar calls or invitations, or anything resembling the American church as we know it! We'd be stuck in dead liturgy given by an inept Catholic priest, following the heretical traditions of the magisterium as we all drift slowly to Hell without the core doctrine of Justification by Faith! There would have been no Great Awakening, no D.L. Moody, no C.H. Spurgeon, no Martin Loyd-Jones, no Billy Graham, no Puritans, and no hope!
With the reality of no Reformation we see that the resulting movements of religious freedom would have never happened. If these movements were removed here's a horrific reality, America and the western world as we know it would still be stuck in a late middle ages sacral state mentality with everything being dictated by the church! There'd be no America, no religious freedom, no Democratic Republic, and our very freedom that we hold so dear may very well have never happened!
Lastly, I want us to think of the age of technology we live in today. Critical thinking was seemingly birthed and nurtured in the age of the Reformation. Freedom from the Roman Catholic church and the Papacy give rise to the ability to think critically without persecution, the ability to challenge beliefs and ideas that the church held hostage for centuries, the scientific method and it's core structure seem to be dependant upon this freedom! I think it would be possible that without the Reformation there would have been no greater enlightenment, no industrial revolution, no explosion of scientific and subsequently technological advances of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Without the Reformation we could very well be living in a different world stuck in a different era, possibly with no TV, no cell phones, no health care system, no electricity, and no comforts of modern day life!
I pray this has given you an appreciation for a time in history that many have forgotten or that many place inside the box of religion but the reality remains, without the Reformation the world we live in and experience would be vastly different and not for the good! God bless!

Soli Deo Gloria - 500th Anniversary of the Reformation - The Solas
1 Peter 4:11King James Version (KJV)
Isaiah 42:8King James Version (KJV)
John 17:5King James Version (KJV)
Colossians 1:12-19King James Version (KJV)
- “Soli Deo gloria is not precisely parallel to the other four solas because in one sense, it is both the beginning and the end of the other four. The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures to the glory of God alone. Christ humbled Himself to the point of death and was raised and exalted to the right hand of the Father to the glory of God alone. Grace and mercy are offered to rebellious sinners to the glory of God alone. Justification is by faith alone to the glory of God alone. Soli Deo gloria, therefore, is central.
