Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #8

Here we are back for the second half of the fourth week of this blog entitled "Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth!" We've been discussing who we can and can't trust in mainstream evangelism today. Today is on the negative and we'll be focusing on Joyce Meyer. In case you missed the first few weeks worth of entries I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.

We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism where people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. With that said, there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips. One quick google search and you can get commentary and scripture interpretation from Billy Graham to Benny Hinn and everything in between. With so many choices and the deceitfulness of our own hearts we're apt to listen to whomever we "like" or whomever our friends listen to or whatever makes us feel good. In light of this reality let us be diligent in determining who we let speak into our life! Every heretic speaks some truth sometimes or no one would listen. My goal over the next few months is to do two blogs a week, both critiquing prominent evangelicals in our day, one on someone who is trustworthy, someone who rightly divides the Word, someone who doesn't twist the scriptures, and the other on someone who is untrustworthy, possibly deceived, and even possibly an apostate, who for filthy lucre, distorts the Gospel. Let me say up front that there may be some of these critiques that you absolutely agree with and some you may vehemently reject and at times you may think that I'm being judgmental, harsh, or you may even think I'm crazy but I challenge you to research the Word and the person and then decide. I will praise some of these men and I will reject others, it's not personal but as a Pastor with a Pastor's heart I feel compelled to protect the flock from wolves and to lead the flock to spiritual food that will equip them for this life and the next, that is the sole intent behind these blog entries! Lets get started!

This week's untrustworthy Evangelical is Joyce Meyer.

Once again we are still focusing on the WoF(word of faith) movement and the fanatical and heretical prosperity gospel that has ravaged the Evangelical landscape of the American church. With Kenneth Hagin's influence as he plagurized EW Kenyon's work and brought this heresy that's born in the "American dream gospel" to the limelight, he has left behind many followers and teachers of this deceptive message that plays upon man's sinful nature and his need for self gratification and one of those is Joyce Meyer. Meyer hides behind her "self-empowerment" message directed especially to women and tries to minimize scrutiny by distancing herself from her roots in the WoF movement. She tends to say things that sound biblical and sound good but if you understand her motive and foundation from which they flow you'll see that they're anti-biblical at their core. For example, she may say something like "God wants the best for you," which in essence is true but that doesn't mean he wants to bless you financially but from her foundation that's what she probably means. I'd say the same thing, God does want the best for you but from my foundation rooted in God's sovereignty that means he wants to glorify himself in you no matter what path that takes.
Though she tries to maneuver around her theological foundation it still remains, she got her PhD from Life Christian University which holds to the WoF message and has other graduates such as Kenneth Copeland and Benny Hinn! She still endorses LCU! Though ones education isn't always evident of what they believe let's look at a list of recorded herisies taught by Joyce Meyer from www.bereanresearch.org.

1. Jesus stopped being the Son of God:

“He could have helped himself up until the point where he said I commend my spirit into your hands, at that point he couldn’t do nothing for himself anymore. He had become sin, he was no longer the Son of God. He was sin.” (http://storage.carm.org/joycemeyer/joyce-meyer-Jesus-became-sin-stopped-being-son-of-God.mp3)

Response:  This is heresy.  Jesus did not ever stop becoming the son of God.  Essentially what she is saying is that Jesus stopped being divine, the eternal son, second person of the Trinity. This is an attack on the very nature of Christ and it is a dangerous false teaching.  Joyce Meyer needs to repent and retract this statement.  There is no place in Scripture that says Jesus stopped being the son of God.  She’s adding to the word of God and placing in the hearts and minds of listeners false doctrine.

2. Jesus was born again:

“The minute that blood sacrifice was accepted Jesus was the first human being that was ever born again,” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neKsa_74w7k&feature=related)

Response:  This is just plain wrong.  Being born again means to be saved from the wrath of God for a person’s sins (Eph. 2:1-3), to have a new birth (John 3:3), and to be regenerated (2 Cor. 5:17).  Mrs. Meyer is simply wrong biblically.  Why does she teach this?  It can only be because she has bought into many of the errors of the Positive Confession movement where many say that Jesus lost his divine nature, went to hell, finished the atonement in hell, and was born again!  These are serious errors.

3. Jesus paid for our sins in hell:

“He became our sacrifice and died on the cross. He did not stay dead. He was in the grave three days. During that time he entered hell, where you and I deserve to go (legally) because of our sin. He paid the price there.” (The most important decision you’ll ever make, by Joyce Meyer, second printing, may 1993, page 35)

Response:  This is blatantly wrong.  Jesus did not pay the price of our redemption in hell.  He paid the price on the cross.  It was finished on the cross when he said, “It is finished,” (John 19:30).  Also, consider the following verses:
Col. 1:20, “and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.”
Col. 2:14, “having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
1 Pet. 2:24, “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”

4. Jesus went to hell in our place and was tormented:

“Jesus paid on the cross and went to hell in my place. Then as God had promised, on the third day Jesus rose from the dead. The scene in the spirit realm went something like this: God rose up from his throne and said to demon powers tormenting the sinless son of God, ‘let him go.’ Then the resurrection power of Almighty God went through hell and filled Jesus. On earth his grave where they had buried him was filled with light as the power of God filled his body. He was resurrected from the dead — the first born again man.” (The most important decision you’ll ever make, by Joyce Meyer, second printing, may 1993, page 36)

Response:  Where does she get this entirely fictitious dialogue between God and the demon powers?  It is made up, not founded in scripture, and mistakenly assumes that Jesus went to hell, the place of torment and suffering after he died on the cross.  The Bible does not teach any such thing.  However, it does say that Jesus descended into the lower parts of the earth (Eph. 4:9).  This can mean that Jesus was physically buried, or that Jesus went to Hades to inform those who had already died about who he was and what he did on the cross, or it can be referring to his incarnation as is contrasted with his ascending into heaven (Eph. 4:10).  But there is simply no reason to believe that Jesus suffered in hell and finished the atonement there.  See response to Quote 1.

5. If you don’t believe Jesus went to hell, you cannot be saved:

“His spirit went to hell because that is where we deserve to go… There is no hope of anyone going to heaven unless they believe this truth.” (The most important decision you’ll ever make, by Joyce Meyer, second printing, may 1993, page 37)

Response:  This is an amazingly bad statement on her part.  She is saying that you cannot be saved from your sins unless you believe that Jesus went to  hell where we deserve to go.  This is a false modification of the gospel which is found in 1 Cor. 15:1-4 and states that the gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.  Nowhere in scripture are we told to believe that Jesus suffered for us in hell or that he went there.   This is not only wrong, it is heretical.

6. We are called little gods:

“I was listening to a set of tapes by one man and he explained it like this..this kind of gets the point across…he said why do people have such a fit about God calling his creation, his creation, his man not his whole creation, but his man, little gods? If he’s God what’s he going to call them but the God kind? I mean if you as a human being have a baby you call it a human kind. If if [sic] cattle has another cattle they call it cattle kind. I mean what is God supposed to call ’em? Doesn’t the Bible say we are created in his image? Now you understand I am not saying you are god with a capital G. That is not the issue here so don’t go trying to stone me or yell blasphemy at me.” “The Bible says right here John 10:34…’and Jesus answered is it not written in your law I say we are gods.’ So men are called God’s by the law…”(Joyce Meyer). (www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrP3OLCH9GI&feature=related)

Response:  In this clip she goes on to quote John 10:34 where Jesus says to the Pharisees “you are gods,” which is a quote from Psalm 82:6, which is an imprecatory Psalm of condemnation for the unrighteous judges.  Psalm 82:7 says, “nevertheless you will die like men.”  She then turned to Psalm 82 and went through it.  The video stopped, so I do not know what she would have said about the next, all-important verse.

7. Joyce Meyer said she is not a sinner:

“I am not poor. I am not miserable and I am not a sinner. That is a lie from the pit of hell. That is what I were and if I still was then Jesus died in vain. I’m going to tell you something folks. I didn’t stop sinning until I finally got it through my thick head I wasn’t a sinner anymore. And the religious world thinks that’s heresy and they want to hang you for it. But the Bible says that I am righteous and I can’t be righteous and be a sinner at the same time.” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dmHJdM63hk)

Response:  Mrs. Meyer needs a lesson in basic biblical theology.  1 John 1:8 says, “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”  Notice that John the apostle says “we.”  He includes himself with sinners.  Also, Paul said in Rom. 7:19-20, 24, “For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me…24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?”  Is Joyce Meyer better in Christian character than John and Paul?  I think not.  Mrs. Meyer fails to recognize her own sinfulness, and so mistakenly denies her own sinfulness.  I can only conclude that this false teaching comes from pride because it certainly isn’t biblical.

8. The host of hell were literally on Jesus and were laughing:

“They were having the biggest party that had ever been had. They had my Jesus in the floor and they were standing on his back jumping up and down laughing. And he had become sin. Don’t you think that God was pacing, wanting to put a stop to what was going on? All the host of hell were upon him. Upon him. Up on him. The angels were in agony.  All the creation is groaning. All the host of hell was upon him. Up on him. They got on him. They got him down in the floor and got on him and they were laughing and mocking. Ha ha ha ha. You trusted God and look where you ended up. You thought he’d save you and get you off that cross. He didn’t, ha ha ha.” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwNfOaxIcOMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwNfOaxIcOM)

Response:  Where did she get this – in the sacred Book of Joycemeyeronomy?  It is certainly not in the Bible, and yet she has no problem teaching it as an authoritative truth.  Does she not know that the Bible says not to exceed what is written (1 Cor. 4:6)?  She has done exactly that.  She is in grave error and has violated God’s word that says that Jesus bore our sins in his body on the cross (1 Pet. 2:24) and finished the atonement on the cross (John 19:30) – not in hell at the hands of demons!  There is no way demons were literally standing ‘on’ Jesus.  Meyer is in gross error!

9. Joyce Meyer gets revelation knowledge:

“The Bible can’t even find any way to explain this. Not really that is why you have got to get it by revelation. There are no words to explain what I am telling you. I have got to just trust God that he is putting it into your spirit like he put it into mine.” (http://storage.carm.org/audio/joycemeyer/joyce-meyer-revelation-knowledge.mp3)

Response:  Revelation knowledge?  Is she on par with the apostles who received revelation knowledge from God himself?  Or how about the Old Testament prophets?  Does she, like them, also receive revelation knowledge from God?  If so, how would we know if it were true or not? The answer is simple:  we test what she says against Scripture, and it is obvious that she is getting a lot of things from somewhere else that contradict the word of God.

10. Joyce Meyer is a "pastor"

As unpopular as it might be to say, Joyce Meyer is wrong for occupying the position of a preacher of God’s word.  Not only does she preach false doctrines, but she also functions as a preacher by teaching God’s word, exegeting it, applying it, and telling people what to believe – in public.  She is out of place for doing this.  She speaks as a minister of the gospel teaching with authority.
I'm sure that some that read this may listen to or even like Meyer and her message as it can be very appealing in it's positivity.

I pray you'll do your research and understand her foundation and how twisted her theology and doctrines are to the true Gospel. God bless!

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #7

Here we are back after a break last week leading up to Christmas. This is the fourth week of this blog entitled "Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth!" We've been discussing who we can and can't trust in mainstream evangelism today. Today is on the positive and we'll be focusing on John Piper. In case you missed the first few weeks worth of entries I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.

We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism where people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. Lets get started!

This week's trustworthy Evangelical is Dr. John Piper.

John Piper is well known for what he calls "Christian Hedonism" which is essentially complete joy and adoration in and of Christ. He is now Pastor Emeritus at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minnesota and director and founder of Desiring God. Many of his works and literature can be found at www.desiringgod.org along with his popular podcast "Ask Pastor John." Here is a little of his biographical history according to www.desiringgod.org.

John Piper was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Bill and Ruth Piper January 11, 1946. When John and his older sister were still small, the family moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where John spent his growing-up years. His father was an itinerant evangelist, and his mother died in 1974 in a bus accident while visiting Israel.

In 1980, sensing an irresistible call of the Lord to preach, John became the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he ministered for almost 33 years.

Desiring God began inauspiciously in 1994 when John handed off the church’s tape ministry to his assistant, Jon Bloom.

What started with tapes and John’s books, Desiring God has blossomed into an international web ministry with 12,000+ free resources and 3.5+million monthly users. Today, John serves as lead teacher for the ministry.

Piper is also chancellor of Bethlem college in Minneapolis.

Some of his best know works are "Don't Waste Your Life," "Pierced By The Word," and my favorite, "Spectacular Sins."

Piper's most famous quote is "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him" and so that God's highest pursuit ("his glory") and man's deepest and most durable happiness come together in one pursuit—namely, the pursuit of joy in God.

There are a few things that I personally disagree with concerning Piper's doctrines but on foundational truths he is definitely someone in the Evangelical limelight that we can trust as he rightly divides the Word of Truth!

God bless!

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #6

Here we are back for the third week of this blog entitled "Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth!" We've been discussing who we can and can't trust in mainstream evangelism today. Today is on the negative and we'll be focusing on Jesse Duplantis. In case you missed the first two weeks worth of entries and this week's positive on R.C. Sproul, I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.

This is the third entry concerning untrustworthy evangelicals and todays, last week's, and a few more untrustworthy entries will consists of contemporary prosperity and word-of-faith preachers who were greatly influenced by the two main architects of this movements theology, Kenneth Hagin Sr.(Daddy Hagin) and Oral Roberts and one such person is Jesse Duplantis.

We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism where people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. With that said, there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips. Lets get started!

Jesse Duplantis is a WoF(word of faith) prosperity gospel evangelist whom you've probably caught a glimpse of as you channel surf past TBN on the television. He's best known for his comedic style and extravagant lifestyle and is a close friend with last week's untrustworthy Evangelical, Kenneth Copeland. His heresy isn't just spread through his preaching but it's also in print in books such as "Close Encounters of the God Kind."

Let's get to the point, let's list known heresies credited to Jesse Duplantis.......

- Duplantis uses Genesis 2:7 the same way Copeland does and proclaims that we are "little god's" with the power to "speak" things into existence.

- He claims this power is evident in Genesis as he infers that when God brought the animals to Adam to be named that they were dead and Adam was the one who "breathed" life into them, thus giving Adam diety status.

- Another aspect of Duplantis' heresy concerning this is the statement he's made concerning God's omniscience (knowing all). He claims that God didn't know what he had created and that Adam had to explain it to him. His basis? The fact that he's known smart, creative people who created things by accident! Wow! Comparing the all knowing, all powerful God with fallen man, that always results in good theology! I hope you can hear my sarcasm!

- Claims to have been carried by a chariot to heaven where he talked with Jesus, Abraham, and David. He even said that David told him he regretted writing some of the Psalms! That's believing in the "God Breathed," infallible, perfect Word of God right?

- To top off the trip to heaven experience, Duplantis said that he sensed Jesus was sad so he asked him what was wrong and Jesus' reply was "I need you boy." Yes, you read that correctly.

- The last one, though heretical, is down right rediculous. Duplantis claims that giraffes were made with left over parts from other animals! That's why they look so strange. Trust me, I'm not making this up! Yet he's failed to do his research on the majestic animal as science has proven how precise they are constructed and that it's a natural wonder that they don't pass out from an overflow of blood to the brain when they bend over. Their 25 pound heart is made strong to pump blood to their brain and their jugular veins have one way valves blocking flow when they lower their heads! That's God's perfect work in action, not just left over parts!

I pray this has been helpful and enlightening. God bless. See

This week's trustworthy Evangelical is Dr. R.C. Sproul.

Dr. Sproul has been in the forefront of mainstream reformed theology over the past five decades. His education includes
degrees from Westminster College, Pennsylvania (BA, 1961), Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary (M.Div, 1964), the Free University of Amsterdam (Drs., 1969), and Whitefield Theological Seminary (PhD, 2001). He has taught at numerous colleges and seminaries, including Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and Jackson, Mississippi, and Knox Theological Seminary in Ft. Lauderdale.

Dr. Sproul is chairman and founder of Ligonier Ministries(www.ligonier.org). host of "Renewing Your Mind" radio broadcast, founder of RefNet(www.RefNet.fm) which is a Christian internet radio station, as well as the author of several book which includes such works as "The Holiness of God" and "Not a Chance: The Myth of Chance in Modern Science and Cosmology," as well as being Co-Pastor at St. Andrews Chapel in Sanford, FL.

As well as Dr. James White(the positive from last week) Dr. Sproul is one of my favorite apologists even though they have differing approaches. Dr. White uses presuppositionalism while Dr. Sproul uses the Thomistic approach of "classical apologetics." Many of Dr. Sproul's lectures can be found on YouTube as well as Ligonier where you can also find "Renewing Your Mind" as well as blog entries.

With Dr. Sproul's classical approach you'll be floored by his insight using logic and reason. I pray you'll give him a listen and there's no doubt that your faith will be strengthened. God bless. if

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #4

Here we are back for the second week of this blog. In case you missed the first three entries I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.

This is the second entry concerning untrustworthy evangelicals and todays and the next few untrustworthy entries will consists of contemporary prosperity and word-of-faith preachers who were greatly influenced by the two main architects of this movements theology, Kenneth Hagin Sr.(Daddy Hagin) and Oral Roberts.  Today I want to focus on the heresy of Kenneth Copeland!

We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism where people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. With that said, there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips. Lets get started!

If you've watched any "christian" T.V. such as TBN or Daystar then you've seen and heard of Kenneth Copeland. He has that iconic televangelist hair and bright white smile but let's be honest, there's very little Gospel or truth in the theology and message of Copeland. I don't want to focus too much on Copeland as a person but focus on the matter at hand, his heresy and what makes him untrustworthy. Kenneth Copeland is the spiritual son of the two dominant architects of the "prosperity" "word-of-faith" movements, Kenneth "daddy" Hagin Sr. and Oral Roberts, you've probably heard of the latter. Copeland has spewed this gospel-less message for decades and is quite wealthy because of it.

Let's get to the point his ministry is built entirely on the foundational belief that you can claim health and wealth by speaking it into existence by faith. Heresy! Worth an estimated $700 million you could say he's doing well lying to unsuspected people searching the airwaves for answers.

              Copeland's Heresies -

1.) Claims that Jesus never claimed to be God.
2.) Is quoted as saying "the biggest failure in the Bible is God! Claimed that God was on the outside looking in when Satan deceived Eve in the Garden and had to concoct a plan to get back into his own creation. This is completely unbiblical and undermines the sovereignty of God!
3.) Teaches that we are "little gods" which is prevalent teaching in many heretical cults such as Mormonism and Jehovah's Witnesses and distorts Genesis 1:27 to make it believable.
4.) He gives false prophecies.
5.) Claims to have the same creative power of God in word-of-faith.

If Copeland's on the T.V. turn it off and pray for him! Thank God for discernment and the direction of the Word of God! May we consistently rightly divide the Word of God and allow it to determine who's truthful and who's a heretic. God Bless!

“God’s reason for creating Adam was His desire to reproduce Himself…He was not a little like God. He was not almost like God. He was not subordinate to God even.” (Kenneth Copeland, Following the Faith of Abraham I (Fort Worth, TX: Kenneth Copeland Ministries, 1989), tape #01-3001, side 1.

“I was shocked when I found out who the biggest failure in the Bible actually is…The biggest one in the whole Bible is God…Now, the reason you don’t think of God as a failure is He never said He’s a failure. And you’re not a failure till you say you’re one.” (Kenneth Copeland, Praise-a-Thon program on TBN (April 1988). He also said, “Adam committed high treason; and at that point, all the dominion and authority God had given to him was handed over to Satan. Suddenly, God was on the outside looking in…After Adam’s fall, God found Himself in a peculiar position…God needed an avenue back into the earth…God laid out His proposition and Abram accepted it. It gave God access to the earth and gave man access to God..Technically, if God ever broke the Covenant, He would have to destroy Himself.” (Kenneth Copeland, Our Covenant with God (Fort Worth, TX: KCP Publications, 1987), 8-11 passim.
What Blasphemy!
“God’s on the outside looking in. He doesn’t have any legal entree into the earth. The thing don’t belong to Him. You see how sassy the Devil was in the presence of God in the book of Job? God said, Where have you been? Wasn’t any of God’s business. He [Satan] didn’t even have to answer if he didn’t want to ..God didn’t argue with him a bit! You see, this is the position that God’s been in…Might say, ‘Well, if God’s running things He’s doing a lousy job of it.” He hadn’t been running ‘em, except when He’s just got, you know, a little bit of a chance.” (Kenneth Copeland, Image of God in You III (Fort Worth, TX: Kenneth Copeland Ministries, 1989), audiotape #01-1403, side 1.

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #3

Here we are back for the second week of this blog. In case you missed the first two entries I do suggest that you go back and read them as well when you're finished here.

This week's trustworthy Evangelical is Dr. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries.

The name may not ring a bell, you may have never heard of Dr. White, he's not found on TBN or any mainstream source, but I decided that the first two trustworthy men in this series of blogs would be the two men that have had the most influence on my spiritual walk and theological perspective and last week we covered Dr. John MacArthur and now Dr. James White.

Dr. White is probably the best apologist for the Christian faith and the Reformed perspective that I've had the privilege of listening to. As an apologist he is an accomplished debater, participating in over 140+ publicly moderated debates in churches, mosques, and other forums across the globe! Dr. White has debated such topics as......
"Is the Trinity Biblical?"
"Can a Christian Lose Their Salvation?"
"Can Men Become God's?"
"Is The New Testament Reliable?"
"Who Controls Salvation?"
Dr. White has debated Mormons, Unitarians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Islamic apologists, Atheists, and more. All of his recorded debates are available at www.aomin.org. Dr. White also does a podcast twice a week which can be found at www.sermonaudio.com.

Dr. White is a professor, having taught Greek, Systematic Theology, and various topics in the field of apologetics. He has authored or contributed to more than twenty four books, including The King James Only ControversyThe Forgotten TrinityThe Potter’s Freedom, and The God Who Justifies. He is a scholar in textual criticism and is a consultant for the Lockman foundation which publishes the NASB English translation of the scriptures.  Dr. White is currently working on another PhD. in textual studies as he examines P45(early papyrus document of the New Testament). As well as being director of Alpha and Omega Ministries, being a published apologist, and an accomplished debater, Dr. White is also an Elder at Phoenix Reformed Baptist Church (sermons and teachings from Dr. White which includes Church History can be found at www.prbc.org).

In my opinion Dr. White is the most consistent Christian apologist with a deep love for the Word, Christ, and the Church! There's a peace in listening as Dr. White exegetes the text of scripture from the original Greek. If you have questions, are unsettled concerning doctrine, or are looking for direction on how to answer a Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, or Muslim then Dr. White is someone you need to watch, listen to, and read. God bless.

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! Part #2

Here we are back for the second part of this weeks blog. Let me get you up to speed in case you missed the first entry but i do suggest you go back and read it as well when you're finished here.

We can all agree that we live in a generation and culture(if you're in America) of easy believism and people have the ability to get their message out to millions with just the click of a mouse. With that said, there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips.                          Unfortunately it's time to address the negative, someone we CANNOT trust........

                                                                         Benny Hinn

It's hard to find a place to start but let's begin with background. Hinn was born in the early years of the establishment of the nation of Israel, in Israel, into a family of Greek Orthodox Christians. After certain situations his family moved to Canada where Hinn heard the heretical word-of-faith false Gospel by a woman evangelist named Kathryn Khulman and was mentored at Broadview Faith Temple by Winston I. Nunes who was a part of the charismatic heretical "latter Rain" movement. Hinn has never turned from what he learned and saw in his early years under the preaching of a false gospel, he's actually travelled farther into heresy than his mentors and have influenced, blinded, and mislead millions along the way!

There have been countless controversies surrounding Hinn over the last few decades. From investigations by the Federal Government concerning financial wrong doings to undercover surveillance by HBO and CBC which seemed to paint a vastly different picture of Hinn's "Miracle Faith-Healing Services" broadcasts around the world. It's been documented that at these "miracle" services those who are visibly disabled are ushered out of the line to Hinn, some even pushed away after refusing to step aside. In November 2004, the CBC Television show The Fifth Estate did a special titled "Do You Believe in Miracles" on the apparent transgressions committed by Benny Hinn's ministry. With the aid of hidden cameras and crusade witnesses, the producers of the show demonstrated Hinn's apparent misappropriation of funds, his fabrication of the truth, and the way in which his staff chose crusade audience members to come on stage to proclaim their miracle healings. In particular, the investigation highlighted the fact that the most desperate miracle seekers who attend a Hinn crusade—the quadriplegics, the brain-damaged, virtually anyone with a visibly obvious physical condition—are never allowed up on stage; those who attempt to get in the line of possible healings are intercepted and directed to return to their seats. At one Canadian service, hidden cameras showed a mother who was carrying her muscular dystrophy-afflicted daughter, Grace, being stopped by two screeners when they attempted to get into the line for a possible blessing from Hinn. The screeners asked the mother if Grace had been healed, and when the mother replied in the negative, they were told to return to their seats; the pair got out of line, but Grace, wanting "Pastor Benny to pray for [her]," asked her mother to support her as she tried to walk as a show of "her faith in action," according to the mother. After several unsuccessful attempts at walking, the pair left the arena in tears, both mother and daughter visibly upset at being turned aside and crying as they explained to the undercover reporters that all Grace had wanted was for Hinn to pray for her, but the staffers rushed them out of the line when they found out Grace had not been healed. A week later at a service in Toronto, Baptist evangelist Justin Peters, who wrote his Masters in Divinity thesis on Benny Hinn and has attended numerous Hinn crusades since 2000 as part of his research for his thesis and for a seminar he developed about the Word of Faith movement entitled A Call for Discernment, also demonstrated to the hidden cameras that "people who look like me"—Peters has cerebral palsy, walks with arm-crutches, and is obviously and visibly disabled—"are never allowed on stage [...] it's always somebody who has some disability or disease that cannot be readily seen." Like Grace and her mother, Peters was quickly intercepted as he came out of the wheelchair section (there is one at every crusade, situated at the back of the audience, far away from the stage, and never filmed for Hinn's TV show) in an attempt to join the line of those waiting to go onstage, and was told to take a seat. This segment was later edited with new footage and shown on Dateline: NBC in November 2005. Hinn has also been accused of an affair with Paula White(another heretical charismatic) around the time of his divorce from his wife. Initially denied, Hinn eventually confessed that they did have a "relationship." Hinn later remarried his first wife after a few years of being divorced in a lavish ceremony, all of which is COMPLETELY unbiblical, Deuteronomy even labels such an act an abomination. Though significant, these moral failures of Hinn aren't the most horrific atrocities of his ministry!

What's most disturbing are his false teachings concerning God's Word! Hinn has twisted, manipulated, and deliberately used scripture in the same way the initial deceiver did in the garden! Hinn is a charlatan of the most extreme kind, a false prophet, and a wolf in sheep's clothing. That's strong language but the stakes are too high to coddle our PC emotions. We wouldn't leave our children in the presence of a predator such as a lion or pedophile, we would call them out and defend those who are under our care. I pray that you realize that that's exactly what I'm doing here, protecting those I love by calling out the enemy and using the sword of the Lord in defense. Here are some of Hinn's false prophesies and heresies......

  • Claims he and a Catholic priest channeled the power of God to heal practically every patient at a hospital in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada.
  • Claimed to have video of Jesus walking around in one of his meetings.  When asked to show the video, his staff said it had been “misplaced.”
  • On Dec. 31, 1989, Hinn went into a trance and said God was giving him (in real time) prophecies about major events that would occur before the end of the next decade. Hinn predicted the total collapse of the American economy within a decade. He declared that during the 1990s the East Coast would be be ravaged by earthquakes; a female would be elected as president; Fidel Castro would die in office; a “short man dictator” would arise; the rapture of the church would occur; and the homosexual community of America would be destroyed by fire “in ’94 or ’95, no later than that.”
  • Claimed God told him by divine revelation that there are nine members in the Godhead.
  • Claimed that as a young man he was in his room talking to the Holy Spirit.  When called to supper by the “woman of the house,” he said, “as I was about to leave, I felt someone take my hand and say, ‘Five more minutes.  Just five more minutes.’  The Holy Spirit longed for my fellowship.”
  • Claimed that an image of Jesus appeared on the wall of his church and “stayed for eight weeks.”  Hinn says, “Even the people who studied the Shroud of Turin came to see this image. …the mouth [of Jesus] would move, the Lord’s mouth would move…but His mouth would only move as I was preaching.”
  • Claimed (repeatedly) that he once saw a man raised from the dead on the platform on which he was standing.  When later questioned by a reporter about the incident he said, “I did not see it.  In that one case we did hear about it.”
  • Regularly “slays in the Spirit” people who get up on stage by touching them on the forehead or cheeks, waving his coat at them, or yelling, “Fire!”  Once he even managed to slay himself!  This practice has not one shred of biblical support.
  • Claimed to have a department that verifies all his healings. Justin Peters who writes for Grace To You said he has spoken with a former employee of Hinn who says not only that the healings are not verified but that such a department does not even exist.
  • Seed-faith theology is a staple in Hinn’s teaching. He promises people that if they “sow a seed” (translated, give him money), God will give them a “harvest.”
  • Teaches that “if the preaching of the gospel lacks signs and wonders, it’s an empty shell.”
  • Claimed the Holy Spirit told him women were originally intended to give birth out of their sides.
R.C. Sproul says "What do we mean by heresy? Is every theological error a heresy? In a broad sense, every departure from biblical truth may be regarded as a heresy. But in the currency of Christian thought, the term heresy has usually been reserved for gross and heinous distortions of biblical truth, for errors so grave that they threaten either the essence of the Christian faith or the well-being of the Christian church. Hinn fits that box! I pray that you'll consider the Word and the man and see the truth of the matter. If the blind lead the blind, both fall in the ditch, the sad part is Hinn will be in the ditch with those he deceived but he'll be rich and they'll typically be poor! Don't fall for the show, the theatrics, and the flamboyance, it's a trap of the enemy! Discernment seems to be dead in our age of tolerance but the truth of the scriptures can't be broken or negotiated with! God bless!

Who Can We Trust? Rightly Dividing The Word of Truth! #1

In a world of easy believism and the ability to get your message out to millions with just the click of a mouse there is a slew of theological information at our fingertips. One quick google search and you can get commentary and scripture interpretation from Billy Graham to Benny Hinn and everything in between. Lets get started!

Let's start off on the positive, let's start with someone we CAN trust........

                                                               Dr.  John MacArthur Jr.

There are two men that have been pivotal in leading me into the depths of truth contained in God's Word and John MacArthur is one of them. (Dr. James White is the other and we'll cover him in the next positive!) John MacArthur has served as Pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California since 1969 after graduating from Talbot Theological Seminary. For nearly fifty years Dr. John MacArthur has devoted himself to verse-by-verse exposition of the Word of God from the pulpit of Grace Community Church as well as on television, radio, internet, in publication, and conferences around the globe. He's the founder of Grace to You Media Ministries and the President of The Master's University & Seminary. Please understand that accolades, degrees, and popularity do not equate truthfulness, integrity, and scriptural purity but I just wanted you to see the longevity of one man consistently preaching the Word in it's context as it was meant for the reader in it's day. Going verse-by-verse Dr. MacArthur couldn't avoid troubling scriptures, hard doctrines, and things that make us uncomfortable. This man has been faithful in presenting the truth of God's Word!

He published his first book in 1988 "The Gospel According to Jesus" with 400 more books, study guides, and commentaries also published through the years. "Strange Fire" is one of my favorites! In 2015 the "MacArthur New Testament Commentary" was completed with thirty-three volumes as Dr. MacArthur goes verse-by-verse in detail throughout the entire New Testament.

Dr. MacArthur teaches sound biblical doctrine with proper hermeneutics to deliver sound exegesis of the text of scripture. From Reformed theology to a literal reign of Christ in the millennium Dr. MacArthur, in my opinion, is one of the greatest expositor's of our day!

Fear vs Faith: A God of The Known & Unknown!

If you're like me then at times you struggle with fear. I've struggled with fear, anxiety, depression, and stress since my early teens and at times it has gripped my life, limited my actions, and sucked the joy right out of me. I let fear confine me to my home town for three years! Three straight years I didn't leave the city limits of my home town because of fear, fear of what? The Unknown! I feared death, loneliness, tragedy, loss! You name it, I feared it! I've allowed the fear of what "may" happen tomorrow rob me of the joy of what had actually happened today! Listening to myself say that out loud in hindsight I realize how foolish I was! The things is, it wasn't events, people, or actions I feared, it was words! I feared words fueled by doubt. All the enemy had to do is speak doubt and I ate it up! Fear comes from doubt in the sovereignty of the God of the known and unknown! Faith drives out fear because it calls out the lies of the enemy as he speaks doubt! And even if tragedy happens, even if my worst fears come true the promise of God is that it will pass and eternal life will come! My trial doesn't define me, my fears can't confine me, my pain can't keep reminding me because one day they'll all be gone and I'll be with Christ who died for me! Don't trust what you see, trust what you know! If you go outside on a clear night and look up in the sky you can see, at most, three thousand stars and God named each one of them! Isn't that beautiful and amazing? But there's an unseen reality, you only see up to three thousand with the naked eye but there are billions and billions of stars that you can't see and he named them too! God is the God of the seen and the unseen, the known and the unknown! Scripture says that not even a sparrow falls from the sky without God's concent! He says the hairs on our head are numbered! If God is that meticulous in naming and hanging the stars, if he's so focused on the safety of some of his smallest creatures then I'm pretty sure he's watching over me! Why should I fear? He sees what I can't and knows what I don't. It's not about what I see it's about what I know and what I know is that I may make my plans but God directs my steps! Trust suffocates fear! Kill it and live in freedom!

Where Would I Be Today Without The Reformation? - 500th Anniversary of the Reformation

There are times in our lives where we must reflect on the past, maybe past decisions or even events in the past that preceded our very lives but were essential and instrumental in shaping who we are, what we believe, and how we live. That's my goal today! I want us to ask ourselves this question "where would I be today without the Reformation?" I would argue that the Reformation was inevitable and decreed by God to restore his church but just imagine with me for a moment, there was no Luther, no Calvin, no Zwingli, no protestantism, and on and on. What would that look like today?

First let's face the biggest reality of where we would be in the realm of church and worship. We definitely wouldn't be sitting in the "Bible belt" churches of America singing hymns by Wesley or Luther, we wouldn't have expositional passionate preaching, we wouldn't have altar calls or invitations, or anything resembling the American church as we know it! We'd be stuck in dead liturgy given by an inept Catholic priest, following the heretical traditions of the magisterium as we all drift slowly to Hell without the core doctrine of Justification by Faith! There would have been no Great Awakening, no D.L. Moody, no C.H. Spurgeon, no Martin Loyd-Jones, no Billy Graham, no Puritans, and no hope!

With the reality of no Reformation we see that the resulting movements of religious freedom would have never happened. If these movements were removed here's a horrific reality, America and the western world as we know it would still be stuck in a late middle ages sacral state mentality with everything being dictated by the church! There'd be no America, no religious freedom, no Democratic Republic, and our very freedom that we hold so dear may very well have never happened!

Lastly, I want us to think of the age of technology we live in today. Critical thinking was seemingly birthed and nurtured in the age of the Reformation. Freedom from the Roman Catholic church and the Papacy give rise to the ability to think critically without persecution, the ability to challenge beliefs and ideas that the church held hostage for centuries, the scientific method and it's core structure seem to be dependant upon this freedom! I think it would be possible that without the Reformation there would have been no greater enlightenment, no industrial revolution, no explosion of scientific and subsequently technological advances of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Without the Reformation we could very well be living in a different world stuck in a different era, possibly with no TV, no cell phones, no health care system, no electricity, and no comforts of modern day life!

I pray this has given you an appreciation for a time in history that many have forgotten or that many place inside the box of religion but the reality remains, without the Reformation the world we live in and experience would be vastly different and not for the good! God bless!

Soli Deo Gloria - 500th Anniversary of the Reformation - The Solas

Soli Deo Gloria – For The Glory Of God Alone!”

Text: 1 Peter 4:11

It's ALL about HIM!

1 Peter 4:11King James Version (KJV)

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

- We glorify God! As his creation, created in His purpose and decree, we glorify Him! -

Isaiah 42:8King James Version (KJV)

8 I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
- He gives His glory to NO ONE! -

John 17:5King James Version (KJV)

5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
- Here we see the Glory revealed in the Trinity -

Colossians 1:12-19King James Version (KJV)

12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

- God's glory at it's greatest, revealed in His dear son through the work of Redemption! -

- Once again as we continue through the 5 sola's we come to the end, Soli Deo Gloria or For The Glory Of God Alone! The doctrine of the corrupted Catholic Church adhered to what Martin Luther called the “theology of glory” (in opposition to the “theology of the cross”), in which the glory for a sinner's salvation could be attributed partly to Christ, partly to Mary and the saints, and partly to the sinner himself. The reformers responded, “No, the only true gospel is that which gives all glory to God alone, as is taught in the scriptures.” -

Glory belongs to God alone. God’s glory is the central motivation for salvation, not improving the lives of people—though that is a wonderful by product. God is not a means to an end—he is the means and the end.

As The Westminster Catechism says, the chief purpose of human life is “to glorify God and enjoy him forever.”

- The reformer's BOLDLY cried Soli Deo Gloria! Proclaiming that God alone receives glory for Salvation! God alone is he who choses, he who works, he who justifies, he who sanctifies, he who glorifies, so HE ALONE receives the GLORY! -

It is affirmed that because salvation is of God and has been accomplished by God, it is for God's glory and that we must glorify him always. We must live our entire lives before the face of God, under the authority of God and for his glory alone. It is denied that we can properly glorify God if our worship is confused with entertainment, if we neglect either Law or Gospel in our preaching, or if self-improvement, self-esteem or self- fulfillment are allowed to become alternatives to the gospel.
    - Keith Mathison of Ligonier Ministries says -
  • Soli Deo gloria is not precisely parallel to the other four solas because in one sense, it is both the beginning and the end of the other four. The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures to the glory of God alone. Christ humbled Himself to the point of death and was raised and exalted to the right hand of the Father to the glory of God alone. Grace and mercy are offered to rebellious sinners to the glory of God alone. Justification is by faith alone to the glory of God alone. Soli Deo gloria, therefore, is central.
It is important to understand that when we talk about God’s glory, we are talking first and foremost about an attribute of God. As the Westminster Confession of Faith explains: “God hath all life, glory, goodness, blessedness, in and of Himself” (2.2) He is the God of glory (Acts 7:2). He also manifests His glory in the works of creation and redemption, most significantly in the person and work of Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory (1 Cor. 2:8).

God also glorifies Himself in and through the church. We as believers are called to do whatever we do to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). We are to use our gifts to serve one another “in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 4:10–11). The Psalms are filled from beginning to end with ascriptions of praise to the glory of God, and this demonstrates where the focus of the church’s worship should be. Worship does not exist for our entertainment. Worship exists for the glory of God alone.
- What Does This Look Like? -
- As A Believer, How Do I Glorify God? -

1.) We Exist For His Glory Alone!

Genesis 1:27King James Version (KJV)

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
- BUT that image is broken! -

Romans 3:23King James Version (KJV)

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

- YET -

Isaiah 48:9-11King James Version (KJV)

9 For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.
10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.
11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

- ALL of Creation and it's existence Glorify God! -

Romans 9:17-24King James Version (KJV)

17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. 19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

- John Piper says -
The glory of God is the beauty and excellence of his manifold perfections. It is an attempt to put into words what God is like in his magnificence and purity. It refers to his infinite and overflowing fullness of all that is good. The term might focus on his different attributes from time to time — like his power and wisdom and mercy and justice — because each one is indeed awesome and beautiful in its magnitude and quality. But in general, God’s glory is the perfect harmony of all his attributes into one infinitely beautiful and personal being.
Now when God says that he created us for his glory, it cannot mean that he created us so that he would become more glorious, that his beauty and perfection would be somehow increased by us. It is unthinkable that God should become more perfectly God by making something that is not God. It is a staggering but necessary thought that God has always existed, that he never came into being, and that everything which exists which is not God is from his fullness and can never add anything to him which did not come from him. That is what it means to be God; and it should humble us, O, how it should humble us, when we ponder his reality!

But this means that when God says he made us for his glory, he does not mean he made us so that he could become more glorious in himself. Instead what it means is that he created us to display his glory, that is, that his glory might be known and praised.

2.) We Are Redeemed For His Glory Alone!

Revelation 5King James Version (KJV)

5 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? 3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. 4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. 5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. 6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. 7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. 8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. 9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. 11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. 13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
- Before the foundations of the earth, He was the Lamb slain! A Redeemer before we needed redeeming! -

- In Salvation we express and receive the fullness of God's mercy, Grace, love, compassion, longsuffering, and righteousness! -

- Salvation is God's work, we are His workmanship! -

- It's ALL Him! We are and do NOTHING! -

Ephesians 2:4-10King James Version (KJV)

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

- To God Be The Glory! -

If I'm redeemed for His Glory, what does that mean now?

3.) Now We Must Live For His Glory Alone!

1 Corinthians 10:31King James Version (KJV)

31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

- You are now DEAD, you are alive in Christ! -

Galatians 2:20King James Version (KJV)

20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20King James Version (KJV)

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

- As we step into Glory, the eternal state, the final kingdom. As God himself wipes away all of our tears and takes away death and all of our pain, that will be the beginning of an infinite eternity of praising God and giving Him GLORY! -

In Closing:

The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures to the glory of God alone. Christ humbled Himself to the point of death and was raised and exalted to the right hand of the Father to the glory of God alone. Grace and mercy are offered to rebellious sinners to the glory of God alone. Justification is by faith alone to the glory of God alone.

- To God Be The Glory, FOREVER and EVER AMEN! -
